Block Paving Looking Tired? When to Clean, Reseal or Restore

Block paving that's gone grey, weedy and tired can make a whole house look neglected — but ripping it up and starting again is a big job and usually unnecessary. There are three levels of restoration, and knowing which yours needs saves a lot of unnecessary work.

Level 1: Clean and re-sand

If your paving is structurally fine but dirty, with weeds sprouting through the joints, this is all it needs:

• A thorough clean to strip off algae, grime and weeds
• Re-sanding the joints with kiln-dried sand (this is the step rushed jobs skip — it's what locks the blocks together and keeps weeds out)

Most tired driveways only need this. The transformation from a proper clean and re-sand genuinely surprises people.

Level 2: Clean, re-sand and seal

If you want the finish to last — and to make future cleaning far easier — sealing is the upgrade. After cleaning and re-sanding, a sealant:

• Locks the joint sand in place, dramatically reducing weeds
• Protects against oil stains and general grime
• Can bring back colour with a subtle enhanced finish
• Makes the next clean quicker and easier

Level 3: Restoration or resin overlay

If the paving is sunken, uneven, or too far gone for cleaning to rescue, the answer isn't necessarily full replacement. Options like relaying problem areas or a resin finish can give you a fresh, modern, weed-free surface — often with less disruption than digging everything up.

How to tell which you need

• Dirty but flat and solid → clean and re-sand.
• Want it to stay clean and weed-free → add sealing.
• Uneven, sunken or genuinely worn out → worth discussing restoration or resin.
