Is It Safe to Pressure Wash a Roof? What Every Homeowner Should Know

A mossy, streaked roof drags down the look of an entire house — and moss holding moisture against tiles can genuinely shorten their life. So roof cleaning is worth doing. But "pressure washing" a roof the wrong way is one of the fastest ways to cause damage. Here's what you should know before anyone climbs up there.

The risk with high pressure on a roof

Roof tiles have a protective outer layer, and they're designed to shed water in one direction. Hit them with a high-pressure jet and you can:

• Strip that protective coating, so they weather and stain faster afterwards
• Dislodge or crack tiles
• Force water up under the tiles and into the roof space

That's why a roof should almost never be blasted at full pressure like a driveway.

How roof cleaning should actually be done

The professional approach is a soft-wash method:

1. Remove the bulk moss carefully, by hand or low-pressure, without hammering the tiles.
2. Apply a biocide treatment that kills the remaining moss, algae and spores at the root.
3. Let it work over time — often the roof continues to clear over the following weeks as the treatment does its job and rain rinses it.

This kills the growth rather than just knocking the visible layer off, so it stays clean far longer than a quick blast would.

Safety matters as much as method

Roof work is working at height, which carries real risk. A proper job means the right access equipment and someone who does this regularly — not a ladder and optimism. This is one area where DIY genuinely isn't worth it.
